the Roy Moore situation reminds me a bit of Albert Camus' writing on the Marquis de Sade

the Marquis wanted freedom, but it was specifically freedom to dominate

in "Society of the Friends of Crime" the Marquis could unironically declare himself in favor of the government, even though he intended to violate its laws, bc what he ultimately respected was power

which is just to say, the Moore stuff might shore up support among the conservative base bc what those voters want is also to be able to break rules themselves

every law Trump breaks is a demonstration of power. every accusation Moore throws back shows that he's untouchable

& maybe, if you support them, you too can be

you can see it too in pro-life women who choose to get abortions, usually out of town or state; their strict moral code requires that they have the ability to break it

you can call it hypocrisy a thousand times over, but it's not. the point is to distinguish whom these moral codes apply to & who is above them

  2. @haircut_hippie So the gist is that if you have the power to break a rule and get away with it then that exception is fine according to their moral code? I guess its just implicitly obvious to them?

  3. @InternetR0bot a key part of conservative morality is who's *excluded* from that. Roy Moore (or Trump, say) isn't breaking the rules bc he's in the class of people who don't have to follow them

@InternetR0bot think, for example, of the liberal rules-based world order... from which America is nearly completely exempt. it's similar.

@InternetR0bot or, for many pro-lifers, a key part of being pro-life involves the ability to get an abortion themselves (or for a child or family member) if the need arises
