there have been SO many of these Black Panther fundraisers covered in the news this past week. I can't even keep track but every one I've seen has far exceeded the fundraising goals, and the enthusiasm is really something
There were a few last week but now I see a bunch of small ones popping up in every community, especially as the other ones advertised in the media get more coverage. For example one just launched today gofundme.com/tickets-for-bg…
What's good is extra money is going to Boys and Girls Club in Harlem, but it's still amazing the enthusiasm for sending kids to this. I'm not hating on raising money to send kids to the movie but rather all the other things to help black kids that wouldn't generate enthusiasm
So now the guy who raised the $30K has started a #BlackPantherChallenge to encourage everyone to do the same in their hometown...so now there is a international viral grassroots organizing campaign centered around people raising money to give to Disney so Black kids can see BP
if you go to any of the threads on twitter created by these organizers, it's always full of blavity blacks and allies all cheering and tweeting happy crying cheering gifs and announcing "donated!" i've never seen black money mobilized like that so quickly
I see tweets by some blavity blacks + allies bragging they have donated to multiple such campaigns, and asking to be notified of more, so they can donate to those too. Imagine if we could mobilize this type of enthusiasm, willing to spend, and grassroots over something important?
Neely Fuller really has a clip that applies to just about every situation. This one totally applies. Black people are serious about things that are silly, and silly about things that are serious youtube.com/watch?v=Jawfqs…
I have no problem with sending kids to see a movie, that's fine. It's just the energy, ingenuity and willingness to fund and be grassroots from the people responding and getting inspired to repeat on a local level that bugs me, because they never do it for anything else
I’m starting to think pop/geek culture has become like a religion to some people. Like the real excitement for the kids comes from a proseletyzing stance. They are hoping to “indoctrinate” kids into blerd lifestyle early lol
Make no mistake; the real excitement to these people is be idea of “getting them early” and creating a new generation of blavity blacks/blerds. If they can’t fit in with most black people, they will make the next generation like them instead. This is a blerd Jesus Camp lol
On the currently unreleased new episode of my podcast I brought up how we live in a very secular society so we mythologize billionaires. I think this is probably the same sort of thing, we have a hole where unified myth once was and now it's Harry Potter or BP.
what possibilities is it showing them? It’s a made up African techno-mystical kingdom run by a superhero kingdom. No one says white kids need Justice League to show them what’s possible twitter.com/rabbeni_kim/st…
Now these are spreading to Philly, Nashville, the Carolinas, Sacramento, CA and counting. And everyone is contacting a ton of black celebrities asking them to join in. Why aren’t more people just asking Marvel to donate? Or at least match funds or donate to black charity?
Do you think serious about silly things may be historically linked to the retribution incurred when trying to be serious about serious things? Has WS instructed AA’s to not attempt serious change bc if they do they may get injured or killed?
not even saying this to be funny, I'm dead serious...is it possible to organize a Black Panther fundraiser, then use any extra money raised to help your kids with their real problems? Many of these make 2-3x what's asked, so maybe use it to your advantage? twitter.com/zebraheadphone…
I know it's a sad and imperfect solution, but if liberals of all colors are this eager to part with their money to help black kids with this as opposed to their usual settling for symbolism and awareness raising, maybe people will need to start hijacking that @zebraheadphones
