I moved to UK from NL in 2015 and returned in 2017; agree with @JORISLUIJENDIJK that Brexit is a misdirected class war. Just 1 addition: 1/

I would add that a lot of frustration in UK society (as in US) is systems that *do not work* and don't get fixed bc of politics/culture. /2

Grenfell fire was part of a housing crisis with so many facets: awful standards, astronomic rents, inexplicable failure to build. /3

My time in UK was marked by mind-boggling failure of SouthernRail, my commute from Brighton-London. A crazy conflict that never ended. /4

Union was striking and doing work-to-rule over mgmt move to single-driver crews. 1-hr commute turned into 2 to 4 hrs, unpredictable. /5

Company losing millions of £s in refunds, canceled trains...but govt reimbursed the losses. So situation stretched on...for A YEAR+. /6

600k passengers/day on that line. People were getting fired. Marriages were coming apart. And it just kept going on. Incomprehensible. /7

I kept thinking: what kind of society or political system tolerates this? WTF? And that seemed to be true in so many areas of society. /8

All these old stereotypes that still seemed to be true: plumbing doesn't work; insulation is crap; incomprehensible roads; on and on. /9

So, some aspects of Britain are incomparably lovely. Extraordinary countryside. Social clubbishness, pubs, humor. London itself. Etc. /10

But ultimately it seemed the same conservatism that preserves the gorgeous countryside cripples the ability to build efficient systems. /11

This is where the Dutch and the English really are opposites, not cousins, as @JORISLUIJENDIJK says. /12

The incoherent bike paths in Brighton which start & vanish randomly is partly due to ancient traffic patterns, historic trees etc. /13

In NL historic value would be overridden for sake of a coherent bike system. /14

And nothing like the SouthernRail situation could happen in NL. It's inconceivable. /15

Anyway. Hard to go into all the examples. But pt is that much frustration in England comes from non-functional systems /16
