Quick thread collating recent research on media — old and new — and political polarisation:

tl;dr we obsess over social media filter bubbles, but evidence suggests old media and the least "social" of new media (partisan news sites, not social platforms) are the real problem

5/ None of this is to say social media is blameless — or that its de-polarising impacts are universal — but we (digital media) give it far too much weight because we're all on it.

Old media and increasing physical/geographical isolation along partisan lines is a far bigger deal.

6/6 Worrying that Facebook's new plans include a focus on "groups", i.e the most siloed, interest-based parts of its platform.
