Running a Ruby Conf in a city with 400k population and avg of 12 at user group is different than in a city with 10m and 100 at user group.

  2. @paulanthonywils I think that's a disingenuous comparison when you compare number of out of town attendees at both events.

  3. @glenngillen How many are out of town for Manor? I know a lot of ours are from out of town, which is my point.

  4. @paulanthonywils manor = more local. Which was my point. You draw less from local so comparing scotrug turnouts doesn't seem relevant

  5. @glenngillen So me saying they are different so we should run them differently is not relevant because they are different.

  6. @paulanthonywils haha, touché! Free to run them differently even if they are the same, and love the job you guys have done in the past.

@paulanthonywils just appreciate @lazyatom's points without his socialist leanings. Happily give you guys more money/margin, don't see who..

@paulanthonywils EB rewards. If you're gonna discount would seem more equitable to have something more means tested like student rate.

@paulanthonywils ah, just realised you prob meant the EB approach makes more sense because you don't have the same local pool to draw from?

  7. @glenngillen Historically full price ticket sales is steady but v. slow, and the cash upfront from EB is invaluable to us.

@glenngillen We had student rate in 2008. We had zero take-up.

  8. @paulanthonywils yeah, underestimating cash flow benefits on the assumption you'll sell out quickly. Interested to see how it goes.

@paulanthonywils assumption based on the fact that anecdotally everyone regards yours as one of the best conferences of the year.

  9. @paulanthonywils curious as to whether you approached universities to get the word out about the student rate

  10. @paulanthonywils wonder why there was no interest... currently toying with the idea of running some ruby training, want students there.

  11. @pat It was 2008 and maybe the discount wasn't enough.

  12. @paulanthonywils @glenngillen my EB points are unrelated to local vs. non-local. It's about pricing for an event that's likely to sell out.

@paulanthonywils @glenngillen again, historically SRC sells out. And quickly. So EB has no effect on cash-flow, only total revenue.

  13. @lazyatom @glenngillen Historically SRC does not sell out quickly.

  14. @paulanthonywils @glenngillen I've been clear that my points are based on that assumption. How long did ticket sales take in 2009 & 2010?

    lazyatom

  15. @lazyatom @glenngillen 2009 was lower capacity and sold out within EB period, which is why we changed EB to numbers rather than time.

@lazyatom @glenngillen 2010/11 AFAIR we sold out a few weeks before the conference.

@lazyatom @glenngillen Ok 2011 2 month prior. Long time after opening and after we need to pay many expenses.
