Hannan's idiotic statements about refugee law in this made me genuinely angry. I now realise why. I'll explain why they're so shameful. 1

It's not just the disgusting notion that we repeat the 1930s and someone be left to die because a nominal "quota" is reached. 2

That's self-evidently appalling enough. What I'm dealing with is the nature of refugee law in Europe, specifically the EU. 3

The right to asylum is in the European Treaties; Art. 78 TFEU, Art. 18 Charter of Fundamental Rights. It's there, plain as day. 4

We've been building a Common European Asylum System since 1999. Hannan became an MEP in 1999, sitting in the European Parliament since. 5

And there is a LOT of asylum legislation has gone through that Parliament since 1999. It lays down very clear rules and guidelines. 5

The Qualification Directive and Procedures Directive, the Dublin III Regulation, the Reception Directive... This isn't arbitrary. 6

Nor is it something of which an MEP who's been an MEP during the entire time it's been created can be unaware, including the detail. 7

Any such MEP who then, despite that, claims it's "arbitrary" to a journalist can only reasonably be classed as a fool or a knave. 8

It seems there is a consensus Hannan's not a fool. You may then draw your own conclusions as to the statement he made about "arbitrary". 8

But that's why it made me so angry. The journalist cannot be expected to know the details. But Hannan can. And didn't care. 9

Addendum: the EP voting record shows Hannan has voted on asylum issues even in this Parliament. votewatch.eu/en/term8-danie…
