Of all UK myths about the EU, the notion that Dr. Merkel runs all is the most persuasive. It's actually quite a revealing insight.
The idea of how the EU works appears to be: big countries, who do the telling, and small countries, who are told - a Great Power mindset.
Except: it's not. The EU works by agreement. QMV is set up to prevent that. It empowers smaller countries.
For example, during the Greek crisis in 2015, so far from it being Germany, it was smaller Višegrad countries were harshest in Greece.
I am from a small EU country, yet our concerns have been placed at the top of the EU list, because we persuaded the other member states.
Cameron's blind notion that Dr. Merkel would square it all for him was a perfect example of this mindset, and how it leads to errors.
