This is the practical political impact of double speak on the border issue.

It it UK domestic politics that matters now, not Irish domestic politics, and we are dealing with some pretty ruthless people. Don't let's give them ammunition.

Can I make a practical political suggestion? Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin should let the government know that they won't blame the government if borders return because HMG reneges on promises it has made 3 times: they will blame HMG. (Which ought to come naturally to them.)

But the opposition parties could also let it be known that they will retain the right to criticise the government if it over-promises, or is economical with the truth.
