  2. How can it be a sustainable or safe solution to the problem of Isis fighters to say, effectively, that UK thinks that nations should wash their hands of their own citizens and let Syria's neighbours sort out the problem? itv.com/news/2019-02-1…

  4. Home Secretary wishes to arbitrarily revoke rights of someone the public doesn't like. Worrying thing is that this may work. If it does work, it will encourage further moves of this kind. And it will be easier for them to do so after Brexit, assuming we leave ECHR.

  6. “Someone else’s problem” is hardly a moral - or, probably, effective - response to the radicalisation of a teenager who was born and grew up in Britain.

  7. Regardless of the merits of this individual case, we should all be rather worried by a government claiming the power to unilaterally revoke citizenship rights.

  9. However horrific her defence of ISIS, if the Home Secretary can start with stripping this woman and her week old child of their citizenship for his leadership bid....where does it end? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes isn't just about batman.....

It means you can abhor everything Isis stand for and also stand up to a Home Secretary who is acting unilaterally to rewrite citizenship rights because without scrutiny history teaches us such behaviour never ends well…it’s not an either or…

  10. An alleged criminal UK citizen needs to be tried in a UK court with due process. Treating everyone legally even if, no especially if, they may have done terrible things is what marks us out as a civilised country.

  11. I’m afraid that for various reasons I think today’s decision to strip Miss #Begum of her UK citizenship is a mistake & a dangerous precedent. She was born here, educated here & is our responsibility. We should defend our system & she should be brought back to face the UK courts.

  12. I think Sajid Javid has made a really bad decision to strip Shamima Begum of her citizenship.

  14. A difficult case, sure. But instead of trusting rule of law and the strength of its institutions, Britain opts for policy that is horrible precedent and probably illegal. And unseemly: Why should this woman be Bangladesh's problem?

  15. Home Secretary can only lawfully strip citizenship from dual nationals

But Begum case seems premised on her right to claim to be Bangladeshi

Sorry but aren't we just steps away from treating (part) Jews similarly because they *could* become Israeli under Israel's Law of Return?

  19. This fellow Sajid Javid is a villain. Posing on anti-migrant ships in the Channel. Unilaterally rescinding citizenship. Endlessly playing to the gallery. A bad lot.
