This weekend offers a glimpse into how democracies fall apart. It's not just one advisor violating social norms. It's the journalists, academics & celebrities cheering on neutral institutions going political. This is how you erode democratic norms & public trust in institutions

  2. Agree civil servants have duty not to undermine/sabotage govt policy.

Equally this would have *much* more weight if @GoodwinMJ had (as many of us have) criticised repeated examples of unacceptable politicisation of civil service *by* government (Cameron & Osborne before Johnson)

For example, that the Treasury official website claimed (in red ALL CAPS) that a Brexit vote "would cause a recession" was disgraceful, as I said at the time. twitter.com/jdportes/statu…

And there was this egregious violation of the Civil Service Code by @AntoniaRomeoUK, never sanctioned (at least publicly).

I could go on, of course, but you get the point.

Jonathan Portes @AntoniaRomeoUK. Her staff have already told her that this is complete fantasy.

The undermining of civil service values (in particular the duty to present information objectively in public) by government "politicising" civil service is *far* more damaging to democracy/public debate than one silly tweet.
